DEERFIELD — A 17-year-old boy from Hatfield was killed in a rollover crash on Greenfield Road on Sunday, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Deerfield Police John Paciorek Jr. said the crash occurred at 11:44 a.m. Sunday morning in the area of 400 Greenfield Road (Route 5) near Childs Cross Road. According to DA’s office spokesperson Laurie Loisel, a 17-year-old boy died after the car he was driving rolled over and struck a fire hydrant.

Additionally, a passenger in the vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The crash resulted in an hours-long road closure in the area.

The incident marked the first of two vehicle-related fatalities in the Pioneer Valley on Sunday. Later that night, an 82-year-old man from Hadley died from injuries sustained after he, a pedestrian, was struck by two vehicles in the area of 73 Russell Road (Route 9) in Hadley shortly after 9 p.m., according to Loisel.

Both incidents are being investigated by State Police detectives assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and State Police troopers from the Crime Scene Services Section and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. Additionally, Deerfield Police are investigating the teenager’s death, while Hadley Police are investigating the 82-year-old’s death.

For both crashes, Loisel said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
