WHATELY — Northampton Police took a 57-year-old man from Rimrock, Arizona, into custody Tuesday morning after an 80 mph pursuit on Interstate 91 North ended with the suspect allegedly pulling a knife on police officers.

At approximately 9 a.m., state police troopers from the Shelburne Falls and Northampton barracks responded to I-91 North at the 35-mile marker after receiving reports of a Toyota Prius driving “in and out of lanes erratically,” according to State Police Sgt. Gregory Jones.

Northampton Police Capt. Corey Robinson said police attempted to pull over the suspect, who was wanted on warrants related to past crimes in Northampton, on Route 5 in Northampton before he fled north.

On I-91, Robinson said Northampton Police placed stop sticks in the road to halt the Prius. When the vehicle stopped, Robinson said the suspect left the car and attempted to run away on foot. He said the man brandished a knife when police made contact with him, but Northampton Police were able to disarm him using a “less than lethal weapon.”

Jones, in an email sent to the Recorder, stated that the suspect was taken into custody and subsequently transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital by a Greenfield AMR ambulance. Robinson said he was treated for minor injuries that occurred “as a result of being taken into custody.”

“I just want to thank state police and any other agencies that came down to assist us,” Robinson said. “I’m glad we were able to bring this matter to a peaceful ending.”

Robinson said that aside from the suspect’s outstanding warrants, he is not yet sure which additional charges the Arizona man will face.
