Round one of the 2025 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links qualifier took place on Monday at Westover Golf Course in Granby, with the top 14 placers plus ties advancing to the championship round, which is set for July 29-30 at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston.
Two locals will be heading to Boylston in July, as Crumpin-Fox’s Keith Burch finished in a tie for eighth place with a 3-over 75 while Country Club of Greenfield’s Gunnar Moore earned a tie for 13 with a 5-over 77.
Moore, of Conway, found himself 5-over par through seven holes, but a par on eight and birdie on nine gave him momentum heading into the final nine.
Moore rolled in a 10-footer for birdie on 12 and played holes 13-through-18 at 2-over par to slot him just inside the cut with a 5-over round of 77.
“I definitely got back in the swing of things today,” Moore said. “I played in the Mass Am. qualifier last Wednesday and did terribly, but I’m sort of turning the corner a little bit. So yeah, just stuck in there. Didn’t really fix anything swing-wise, I just grinded it out. Got up and down a couple of times and made a few putts.”
Moore graduated from Deerfield Academy in the spring and is off to Hamilton College in the fall, where he will play golf.
While he said he intends to spend the rest of the summer making the necessary improvements to his game, it was just good enough to get the job done on Monday. After saving bogey on the par-4 14th (he hit his fourth shot from behind the green to about two feet before tapping in for a 5), Moore’s short game was tested again on 15 and 16. He got up and down from short of the green in both instances, keeping him at 4-over and one shot above the cut line.
He had some breathing room heading to the final tee box.

“I wanted to give myself a little cushion,” Moore said. “A couple of those up and downs were to keep me at four when the number was at five. So those were huge. They weren’t necessary, but they gave myself a little bit of room to bogey 18 – which I did.”
It was a tough day on the course for the 70 competitors, as Tekoa Country Club’s Lee Albertson and Northampton County Club’s Galen Fowles were the lone two competitors to shoot par as the two tied for first with scores of 72.
Crumpin-Fox’s Brian Strzempek qualified as an alternate for the Public Links Championship after shooting a 6-over 78. He is one of eight alternates selected on Monday.
Michael Williams of Crumpin-Fox (9-over 81) and Crumpin-Fox’s Mitchell Smith (14-over 86) did not make the cut.
