CONWAY — The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office has identified the 21-year-old Chicopee man who drowned in the Conway Community Swimming Pool on Tuesday as Abdelaziz Ayay.
Ayay drowned in the Conway Community Swimming Pool at 309 Whately Road on Tuesday night at around 7:30 p.m. Ayay was swimming with a female, who was also pulled out of the swimming hole by the Conway Fire Department before being taken to the hospital by Conway Ambulance.
DA’s office spokesperson Laurie Loisel said the death is still under investigation.
The Trustees of the Conway Community Swimming Pool released a statement on the organization’s website expressing condolences to Ayay’s friends and family. The trustees said it is the first time anyone has drowned at the facility in its 75-year history. The swimming hole reopened to the public on Thursday.
“The Trustees of the Conway Community Swimming Pool wish to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the young man who drowned at the pool on the evening of July 22, 2025,” the statement reads. “This was a very unfortunate accident and the first of its kind since the pool opened in 1950. We would like to thank all the rescue personnel who handled the situation professionally and with dignity. The pool will reopen on Thursday, July 24, and we encourage residents to reflect and enjoy the tranquility of the site.”
