GREENFIELD — The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office has identified the 41-year-old Greenfield man who died following an e-bike crash near the Leyden Woods Apartments shortly after midnight on Tuesday as Jonathan D. Russo.

Neighbor Christina Gallison, a personal care attendant, said she was one of the first two people on scene following the crash, which happened outside her apartment. Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge previously said he believes Russo crashed into a parked vehicle at around 12:15 a.m., and he was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear.

“I heard what sounded like somebody crushing a plastic bottle. It was weird,” Gallison recalled. “And it happened and I didn’t think anything of it — we’ve got kids roaming around there constantly. And then it happened again, but it was louder.”

Gallison said she looked out her bedroom window and saw the crash scene. She said she hurried outside and was about to call 911 until another woman did and told dispatchers what had happened. Gallison explained she stood near Russo on Leyden Woods Lane to ensure no vehicles would strike him. Two police officers then arrived and started CPR.

“As soon as they rolled him over, he stopped breathing,” she recalled. “That’s when they started compressions [on his chest].”

Russo was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where he was pronounced dead at around 1 a.m.

As a PCA, Gallison said she has become accustomed to witnessing death, but not with trauma or violence involved.

“Nothing I ever want to see again,” she said. “Oddly enough, I went to bed early and I could not go to sleep. For some reason, all I did was toss and turn, toss and turn. And then after everything, I was like, ‘That’s probably why. Something was telling me not to go to sleep.’”

Russo’s aunt, Pamela Monette, who lives in Florida, said her nephew loved fishing and knife collecting.

DA’s office spokesperson Laurie Loisel said the crash remains under investigation.

“It’s a tragic end and not something we would expect to see from a bicycle accident,” Dodge said Tuesday, noting that e-bikes can go extremely fast and he strongly recommends users wear protective gear, even though it is not required by law.
