SHUTESBURY — A man was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on Monday after the 18-wheeler he was driving careened through the intersection of Daniel Shays Highway (Route 202) and Prescott Road, crashed through a guardrail and rolled onto its side.

Ken Yates, a trooper with Massachusetts State Police, said the driver was conscious and alert when the ambulance left. He said the 18-wheeler was traveling southeast down Prescott Road at around 2:30 p.m. when it went off the roadway, slammed into a stop sign and crashed through the guardrail on the opposite side of the highway.

Authorities blocked traffic on Route 202 southbound and a Shutesbury Police officer directed vehicles. Red’s Towing, Recovery & Transport arrived to remove the 18-wheeler.

A traffic advisory from the state Department of Transportation that was released shortly before 4 p.m. noted that Route 202 southbound traffic was being detoured via Prescott Road in Shutesbury, and Route 202 northbound traffic was being detoured via Amherst Road in Pelham. Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes and avoid the area if possible. MassDOT advised the closure would likely be in place for several hours.
