NORTHAMPTON — For one night only, Eggtooth Productions is putting on a production of Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando” at the Academy of Music.
Directed by Eggtooth Productions’ founder and Artistic Director Linda McInerney, the Saturday, May 17 production will feature original lighting and sound design as well as intricately designed costumes from each of the play’s historical periods. According to McInerney, the show, which will start at 7:30 p.m., is set to be a celebration of the local trans community amid the current political climate.
“It’s very important to bring people together around this issue, to celebrate our trans community, to sit beside them in a theater where we can all be together for a joyful, dreamy 90 minutes and do something positive,” McInerney explained.
Based on Woolf’s novel, the show tells the story of a young nobleman, Orlando, who is drawn into a love affair with Queen Elizabeth I. For a time, life at court is interesting enough, but Orlando yearns for something more. As he strives to make his way as a poet and lover, his travels through time and space keep him at the heart of a tale where gender and gender freedom shift regularly.
This version of the play is adapted by American playwright Sarah Ruhl. Casting for the show was done internally, employing some of Eggtooth Productions’ 40 actors. Playing the lead role of Orlando is Linda Tardif, managing director of the Shea Theater Arts Center in Turners Falls. She will be surrounded by an ensemble cast that includes Kyle Boatwright, Lindel Hart and Rich Vaden.
Eggtooth Productions, based in Greenfield, was founded in the late 1980s as a community-based theater. Encouraging collaboration, the organization rarely hires directors and choreographers, instead allowing the many people involved to create ideas together. Eggtooth Productions also has an affinity for putting on LGBTQ-related shows, frequently putting on drag shows.
“We don’t really fall into the usual box of a community theater and yet we are very much community-based,” McInerney said. “We are Pioneer Valley-based, we are devoted to this area, we are devoted to caring for this area and the people who live here.”
Tickets are priced at $20 but all students with a valid student ID will be admitted for free, an effort to share the show’s message with as many young people as possible.

“It felt very important to me to invite every young person who ever wanted to see something like this to be able to come,” McInerney said.
