HATFIELD — Marlo Warner II of Greenfield has been chosen as Hatfield’s next Department of Public Works director, bringing with him more than 28 years of experience in public works, including nine years in leadership roles.
With an agreement in place on a three-year contract that will pay him $125,000 in the first year, Warner, who has led Greenfield’s DPW since October 2018, will start his new job on July 14. He will supervise the town’s water, wastewater and highway departments.
Warner replaces Phil Genovese, who retired in January after 15 years in the position.
“Hatfield is a wonderful town and I welcome the opportunity to work with the Selectboard in fulfilling the [DPW’s] mission,” Warner said in a statement.
Warner, who was DPW director for the first time in Hadley starting in 2016 before returning to his home city after two and a half years, was chosen over two other finalists. The other finalists, who were interviewed publicly on June 10, were Randall Kemp, highway superintendent in Southampton, and Tony Lastowski, Hatfield’s water superintendent.
Warner also has experience from the commercial construction industry and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.
During his public interview, Warner said the DPW interfaces with all other departments and works closely with other public safety personnel. He said he strives to have good communication with taxpayers, too.
“I pride myself on running an efficient and safe department of public works,” he said.

Warner said he applied for the Hatfield job because he misses working with a Selectboard and Town Meeting, which can be less challenging than reporting to a mayor and city councilors in Greenfield.
“I really like this form of government and that’s what really made me enthusiastic to apply here,” Warner said.
“Marlo’s experience should make him an excellent fit for Hatfield,” Selectboard Chair Ed Jaworski said. “We had some very strong candidates and we think he brings a lot to the table.”
With Warner’s departure on the horizon, Greenfield has tapped Paul Newell, who has served as deputy director of the DPW since September 2024, to take over his position.
Newell, one of the city’s most seasoned staff members, has worked in the Greenfield DPW since January 1989. During that time, he has worked as an assistant mechanic, mechanic, master mechanic, foreman, assistant field superintendent and field superintendent. Additionally, Newell served as the city’s first certified tree warden.
In a statement, Warner said his successor has “earned a wealth of knowledge in all DPW divisions” and is “extremely dedicated to the city of Greenfield.”
“Paul is a tireless worker who has developed a comprehensive understanding of DPW operations across his career,” Greenfield Mayor Ginny Desorgher said in a statement. “His decades of experience will be a tremendous asset as our new director. I would also like to thank Director Warner for his tremendous leadership of the DPW and wish him well on his new venture.”
Newell said in a statement that he is looking forward to “collaborating with the DPW leadership team and staff to tackle new projects that strengthen our city’s infrastructure.”
