GREENFIELD — With a burst of confetti and mortarboards tossed into the air Greenfield High School’s Class of 2025 celebrated 12 years of hard work at their commencement ceremony Saturday morning.
As 87 graduates sat nice and dry in the school auditorium with their friends and family on May 31, Valedictorian Shane Twoomey asked his fellow graduates to carry their memories of late night study sessions and laughing with friends with them as they blazed their next path.
“In the end, we all reached the summit together,” Twoomey said. “Enjoy the fact that your life is now in your hands. You have climbed the mountain and you have done it as a part of a family of travelers who also sought to reach the same. Now we’re all here, and there are countless more trails ahead … the trail we choose to take next is entirely our own.”
Twoomey joked about racing, and subsequently crashing, robots in the hallways and covering smoke detectors to prevent alarms from going off when students burnt popcorn, and said these memories would hold the class together even as they took their next steps on toward their next mountains.
“Memory is strength, and that is our connection,” Twoomey said.
Principal Michael Browning said the graduates should be proud of their accomplishment, and every challenge they’ve faced together, from navigating the beginning of high school as 8th graders during the pandemic to changing administrations. Superintendent Karin Patenaude, who was the principal of the school when the class of 2025 first walked through its doors, echoed these sentiments, and said it has been a privilege to watch them grow and leave their marks on the school.
“We did not get properly introduced till the spring of 2021,” Patenaude said. “I could tell how unique and exceptional this class was, and I envisioned how your impact on Greenfield High School would be felt for years to come; you did not disappoint.”

Patenaude said during the graduates time at Greenfield High the school saw a renaissance of student life. New clubs such as the students of color club and sustainability club were created, the drama and music departments saw a rebirth and athletics flourished.
“I have continued to watch you grow and develop these last five years and I am in awe of all of you,” Patenaude said. “Your strength, passion and patience have given you the ability to reach further and make an impact on the greater world.”
Browning said wherever the students go, whether it be on to college or straight to the workforce, whether they stay local or travel far, they should continue to push themselves as they have done during their years at Greenfield High School. If they continue to “raise the bar and challenge themselves” the graduates will continue to soar and conquer every mountain ahead of them.
“I’m deeply proud of who we are and what we have accomplished. No matter where life takes us next, whether to college, a career or beyond, I have no doubt that we will carry our spirit, passion, and unstoppable drive with us and succeed,” Class President Isabella Semonelli said.
The full ceremony was recorded and can be watched on the Greenfield Community Television YouTube channel.
