The community is invited to join naturalists Pat Serrentino and Alex Haro for an exploration of this wildlife management area in Windsor. The diverse habitats of the site support a wide variety of resident and migrant birds, in addition to those that are just passing through to areas farther north. Habitats range from open meadows to huge marshes and swamps, and forests of spruce, fir, maple and birch. Attendees might see a barred owl or northern harrier, in addition to warblers, vireos and many others.

Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for this moderate to difficult walk (some trails are wet and rocky). Attendees should also be prepared for biting insects and ticks. In addition, the weather in this area can be much cooler than in the valley, so walkers are advised to dress accordingly. Binoculars are helpful but not required.

The walk is free and intended for adults and children over the age of 8. Heavy rain cancels. To register or with questions, call Serrentino at 413-325-6828 or email pserrentino19@gmail.com.

Those interested in attending can carpool from the Staples parking lot in Greenfield at 7:30 a.m. Travel time to the site is about an hour and 15 minutes; walkers should expect to return to Greenfield sometime after noon.

Alternatively, hikers can drive to Windsor from Greenfield by taking Route 2 west to Charlemont, turning left over the bridge and then taking a sharp right to get on Route 8A southbound. Continue on Route 8A until it intersects with Route 116, then turn right toward Savoy. After driving through the center of Savoy, take a left onto Route 8 southbound. Drivers should follow this for 3.4 miles until they see a large parking lot on the right with the Moran Wildlife Management Area sign. Park in the uppermost lot.
