‘Words on Art on Words’ exhibit to open

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. will host an opening reception for the “Words on Art on Words” exhibit on Saturday, July 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The exhibit, a steadily evolving installation, will be on display through August.

The LAVA Center typically has a local artist’s collection displayed on the gallery wall. But this summer, the gallery want to experiment with how artists respond to other artists, and with how different mediums can be in conversation.

Each week, at least four new visual or written pieces will be added to the installation wall. The only rule is that visual artists must create in response to a piece of writing that is already on display and writers must create in response to a piece of visual art that is already on display. Attendees will continue responding and expanding the gallery until the end of August, when there will be a large display of words responding to images responding to words.

In addition, there will be a children’s reception on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is an opportunity for children to respond to the installation.

There will be a closing reception on Friday, Aug. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. during the Greenfield Arts Walk, which will include a small presentation on the evolution of the installation and an opportunity to create something artistic as a final send-off.

For more information about the exhibit, visit thelavacenter.org/exhibits/words-on-art-on-words.

Enrollment open for Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange scholarship program

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange, a farmer-owned cooperative that sells quality agricultural products, pet supplies, and garden and home goods, has opened enrollment in its scholarship program for those pursuing a future in agriculture beyond high school.

In 2023, the Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange launched the scholarship program with a series of priorities in mind: to keep the application process simple and straightforward; to ensure the application eligibility criteria is inclusive of those who may be pursuing a “non-traditional” pathway in pursuit of a career in agriculture; to avoid traditional decision-making biases, such as one’s grade point average, when considering applicant award merit; and to open up the application process widely to attract applicants, rather than through a selection of particular schools.

“We love this scholarship program because it was designed as an opportunity to support a variety of potential applicants, going beyond other traditional scholarship programs,” Board President Jessica O’Neill said in a statement. “We want to be sure that not only those pursuing a college degree in agriculture, but also those electing to enroll in an agricultural-related program or training certificate course are eligible to receive an award. When you get down to it, there is no future without agriculture. The scholarship program is one way we can support the young generation who are our future farmers.”

Thirteen applications were received last year and the Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange was able to award five scholarships. Scholarships amount to up to $1,000 per recipient. Payment of awards is contingent upon the successful completion of at least one semester (for new enrollees, this will be their first semester).

For more information or to apply, visit greenfieldfarmerscoop.com. The deadline to apply is July 11 and scholarship recipients will be notified by email in August.
