GREENFIELD — Calling all knitters: Saturday, June 14, marks Worldwide Knit in Public Day and the Greenfield Public Library intends to celebrate.

Worldwide Knit in Public Day was first celebrated in 2005 as a way to bring knitters out of their crafting rooms and bring them together to bond over a shared hobby.

“It’s all about bringing people together to celebrate a shared interest in knitting,” Greenfield Public Library Information Services Assistant Nancy Little said. “People are welcome to sit anywhere. It’s a pretty casual time to just work on their projects.”

Knitters, as well as crocheters and other fiber artists, are invited to visit the library between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a knit-in and yarn swap. Attendees can bring their knitting or crocheting supplies and gather on the patio to work on a project while interacting with other knitters. Additionally, craftspeople can stop by the upstairs Makerspace and participate in a yarn swap.

If rain prevents attendees from enjoying the patio, Little said people are welcome to sit in the Periodicals Lounge to work on their projects.

This is the second year the Greenfield Public Library has participated in Worldwide Knit in Public Day, according to Little. The library offers a weekly knitting group that welcomes residents to sit together and craft. It was a member of this group who suggested that Greenfield join in on the more than 1,000 knitting events that are held at libraries, schools and other locations around the world on this day each year.
