GREENFIELD — A 41-year-old Greenfield man died following an e-bike crash near the Leyden Woods Apartments at around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

The man, whose name has not yet been made public, died at roughly 1 a.m., according to Laurie Loisel, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge said he believes the man crashed into a parked vehicle. The chief viewed body-camera footage recorded by his officers, who rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived to bring the victim to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. Dodge said the man was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear.

“He perished as a result of the injuries he sustained,” Dodge said. “It’s a tragic end and not something we would expect to see from a bicycle accident.”

Dodge said e-bikes can go extremely fast and he strongly recommends users wear protective gear, even though it is not required by law.
