GREENFIELD — The Greenfield softball team knew it was going to be a challenge playing four games in five days against tough opponents, but the Green Wave were able to end the stretch on a high note with a victory Friday.

The Green Wave beat Mount Greylock to open the week, fell to Hampshire Regional and Westfield but closed out their regular season with a 5-2 victory over Agawam on Friday at Vets Field.

“That was a good, solid team we played,” Greenfield coach Ray Dodge said. “That’s a nice win. We seemed to do everything OK today. I asked the kids to bunt, they bunted. I asked them to drive in runs, they did that. We didn’t make any errors.”

Greenfield closed out its regular season with a 12-6 record. It currently sits as the top seed in the Western Mass. Class C tournament, a tournament the Green Wave have won each of the last three years.

“We feel really good going into the playoffs,” Greenfield senior MacKenzie Paulin said. “Our team has made a lot of progress throughout the season. I have a lot of confidence in us and we’re ready to get that four-peat.”

After the Green Wave gave up two runs in the top of the first inning, Paulin responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.

Madison Lemay added an RBI single in the fourth before Sarah McCloud hit an RBI single in the fifth. Anna Bucala then drove her in with an RBI double to give Greenfield its 5-2 lead. Paulin did not allow a run after the opening frame.

Pitching four times in five days is no easy task, but Paulin was able to work through it to earn the victory on Friday.

“It was a lot,” Paulin said. “It took a lot of perseverance, especially in the circle and pitching all four games. It really comes down to grit and determination when you have four in a week. You have to be there for your team.”

Greenfield enters the playoffs not just looking to defend its Western Mass. crown but looking to take home a MIAA Div. 5 state title. The Green Wave hoisted the trophy in 2022 and 2023.

With a younger team this spring, Bucala said she’s seen Greenfield improve throughout the year.

“We’ve seen a lot of girls grow since the start of the season,” Bucala said. “Everybody is feeling comfortable in their positions. We have to keep our heads in the game, be ready and show up ready to play.”

With the success they’ve had, the Green Wave understand they’ll get every team’s best shot from here on out. Paulin said they’re ready for it.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work and we have to perform in games to get there,” she said. “We have a target on our backs having won [WMass] three times in a row. That’s even more of a push to get there.”
