HS Roundup: Pioneer baseball takes down back-to-back Div. 3 champion Oakmont, 7-3

The Pioneer baseball team continues to pass each test it takes.
Hosting back-to-back defending Division 3 champion Oakmont on Monday in Northfield, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 in the third inning but stormed back to tie the game going into the fifth. Pioneer put three on the board in the fifth and tacked two more on in the sixth to move to a perfect 14-0 on the season with a 7-3 victory.
Ethan Quinn pitched all seven innings for the Panthers, striking out eight and allowing five hits. He also roped a double to go with two RBIs at the plate.
Evan Tsipenyuk doubled and drove in a run, Brody Welcome recorded a hit and an RBI, Alex McClelland knocked two hits and drove in a run while Braeden Tsipenyuk and Jackson Glazier hit safely in the win for Pioneer.
Athol 8, Mahar 2 — Hayden Barrieau smashed a home run, singled and drove in three for the Bears, which took down rival Mahar in Athol Monday.
Logan Cormier knocked three hits, Marc Gould tallied two hits, while Cooper Smith added a base hit for Athol. Anthony Lopez-Hippler struck out 11 while Alex Lavigne added a pair of strikeouts in the win.
Matt Vitello recorded two hits, Kayden McGivens finished with a hit and an RBI while Clayde Thompson, Max Parsons and Caissie Richards added hits for the Sens. Hunter Brooks struck out nine on the mound in the loss.
Franklin Tech 14, Smith Academy 3 (5) — Hunter Donahue went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as the Eagles cruised to a Bi-County North victory over the Falcons in Hatfield Monday.

Mohawk Trail 7, Northampton 5 — Trailing 4-2 going into the sixth, the Warriors exploded for five runs and held on to earn a Franklin County League East victory in Northampton Monday.
Megan Gabaree doubled and drove in a pair of runs, Emmalee Inman singled and added a pair of RBIs, Addie Loomis and Adrian Grant singled while Aurora Moynihan knocked in a run for Mohawk Trail. Grace Stevens struck out three in the victory.
Hopkins 6, Pioneer 1 — Laylah Goulston had a pair of hits for the Panthers, which fell to the Golden Hawks in a Franklin County League East contest in Hadley Monday.
Taylor Chase and Natalie Johnson added base hits while Jaelyn Boliski struck out three in the loss.
Turners 11, Blackstone Valley 0 — Madi Liimatainen did it all on Monday. The senior drilled two home runs, a triple and drove in four runs while adding 10 strikeouts in the circle in the Thunder’s road victory over Div. 3 Blackstone on Monday.
Mia Marigliano homered, knocked two singles and drove in two runs, Maddie Dietz singled, Addison Talbot drove in a pair of runs while Marilyn Abarua added an RBI in the winning effort.
MVADA Championship
The Franklin Tech and Turners Falls track teams competed in the MVADA Track and Field Small School Championship Meet on Monday at Blue Hills Technical School in Canton, with the Tech boys placing 11th overall and the Thunder girls tying for ninth place.
Top 10 placers for the Franklin Tech boys were Samuel Bodenstein in the 200 (fourth, 24.26 seconds), William Thomas in the 800 (eighth, 2:17.56), Jackson Morey in javelin (ninth, 112-10), Wyatt Sisum in shot put (10th, 35 feet, 1.5 inches) and Josiah Little in triple jump (10th, 36-0). The Eagles came in seventh in the 4x100 (48.06).
Top 10 placers for the Turners girls were Abby Lenois in the high jump (second, 4-8), Tristan Bliss in discus (second, 89-11), Molly Howe in the 2 mile (ninth, 15:06.79) and Anya Livingstone in javelin (seventh, 73-3). The Thunder girls placed sixth in the 4x100 (58.74).
Mohawk Trail 89, Athol 34 — Tanner Biagini took the long jump (19-5.5), 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.7) in the Warriors’ victory over the Bears in Buckland Monday.
Rounding out the Mohawk Trail winners were Chay Mojallali in the high jump (6-1), Tristan Feinstein in the pole vault (8-6), Cole Cross in the 110 hurdles (24.5), Peter Healy (4:54.7), Emerson Spence in the 400 (57.5) and Rex Kuoppala in the 800 (2:13.4). The Warriors also won the 4x100 (48.1) and 4x400 (4:21.9).
Athol’s Nick Leblanc set the Bear school record in the discus with a toss of 166 feet, seven inches. Leblanc also won the shot put (43-6.75), Ethan Goodwin won javelin (136-10) while Karim Thompson took the triple jump (37-5).
Mohawk Trail 111.5, Athol 18.5 — Zephyr Jetzon won the long jump (14-11) and 100 (13.7), Lydia Pinkham took pole vault (7-0) and the 200 (28.8) while Morgan Raffa earned first in discus (104-11) and javelin (108-1) in the Warriors’ victory in Buckland Monday.
Other Mohawk Trail winners were Heidi Helenek in the triple jump (30-9) and 100 hurdles (18.4), Natalie Lanoue in high jump (4-8), Naomi den Ouden in the mile (6:49.7), Anya Read in the 400 (68.4), Cleo Gardner in the 400 hurdles (79.8) and Virginia Krezmien in the 800 (2:39.4). The Warriors won the 4x100 (55.4) and 4x400 (4:49.8) relays.
Karleigh Chase won the shot put for Athol (26-4.5).
PVCICS 4, Frontier 1 — Oliver Brown had the lone win on the day for the Redhawks, coming from behind to earn a 4-6, 6-3 (10-4) super tiebreaker victory.
Brown improved to 10-1 on the season with the win.
Greenfield 4, Turners 1 — Palmer King took No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-1), Shane Toomey won in No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2) and Devonne Brown earned a win in No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2) for the Green Wave in a victory over the Thunder at the Davis Street Courts Monday.
Sawyer Thurber and Landon Clark added a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 1 doubles for Greenfield.
Nathanel Martin and May Brierre won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in No. 2 doubles for Turners.
Frontier 3, Turners 2 — Esther Ehle and Aylen Shawn picked up a victory in No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-0) while Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez won in No. 2 doubles (6-0, 2-0 ret.) in the Redhawks’ victory over the Thunder on Monday in South Deerfield.
Ella Sibley closed out the win with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in No. 3 singles.
Olivia Wolbach earned a win in No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1) while Avery Heathwaite took No. 2 singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) for Turners.
Greenfield 4, Mohawk Trail 1 — The Green Wave swept singles, as Amy Mihailicenco won in No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-2), Izzy Semonelli took No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) while Karinna Kostov earned a win in No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-1) in Greenfield’s victory in Buckland Monday.
Vera Jackson and Stella Longe added a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No. 2 doubles for the Wave.
Ivan Hillenbrand and Eliza Crowell won in No. 1 doubles (6-1, 6-0) for Mohawk Trail.
Frontier 3, Putnam 2 — Tegan Dexter and Will Reading both smashed 18 kills as the Redhawks stormed back to earn a 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9 victory in Springfield Monday.
Tavo Vincent-Warner distributed 46 assists and added two kills, Nate Rivera put down 11 kills while Will Petrin added six aces and nine digs in the win.
