Two teams currently in the top 32 of the MIAA Div. 5 boys soccer power rankings met up in Northfield on Monday. 

Pioneer earned a contested 3-2 victory the first time it played Turners Falls and when the two squads met a second time, it was the Panthers who were once again able to come out on top with a 2-0 independent victory. 

Alex McClelland scored just minutes before the first half came to a close by heading in a corner sent in by Matan Lerman-Smith to give Pioneer the lead at the break. Midway through the second half Panther Brody Welcome drove a shot on goal from outside the box that was saved, but McClelland was there to finish the rebound to give Pioneer its 2-0 lead. 

Gavin Gammell made 10 saves in the win, including a big one late in the first half and late in the game to preserve the shutout. 

Monson 4, Greenfield 1 — The Mustangs scored twice in the first half and tacked two goals on in the second half to knock off the Green Wave in Monson on Monday. 

Lucian Volosenco scored off an assist from Chay Mojallali for Greenfield while Liam Grahame-Lawson made 12 saves in the loss. 

Field hockey

Mohawk Trail 3, Hampshire 1 — The Warriors are in the win column. 

Sofiya Slocik-Gritzner, Teagan Donahue and Naomi Den Ouden scored for Mohawk Trail, leading it to its first win of the season with a 3-  1 victory over Hampshire in Westhampton Monday. 

“No matter how overmatched these girls   have been throughout the  first half of the season, they never once got down on themselves or each other,” Warrior coach Greg Lilly said. “Our focus has never been on wins and losses. We focus on getting better each and every day. Every girl on this team played a role leading up to this victory. I’m so proud of these girls.” 

Kyla Perris-Howard provided an assist while Izzy Finn made eight saves in the victory. 

Franklin Tech 1, Mahar 1 — Bella Burnett stood tall in goal for the Senators, stopping 14 of the 15 shots she faced to help Mahar earn a tie against the Eagles at the Woodward Complex Monday. 

Hannah Gilbert gave Franklin Tech the lead in the third quarter, scoring on a corner sent in by Katy Lengiza. The Senators answered early in the fourth quarter when Taylor Paluk smashed in a shot off a pass from Carly Paluk to tie the game. 

Madison Markwell made four saves for the Eagles. 

Greenfield 2, Belchertown 0 — Madi Lemay and Grace Laurie lit up the scoreboard for the Green Wave in a victory over the Orioles on Monday at Donna Woodcock Field. 

Henley Gilstrap and Gloria McDonald provided the assists while Kayden Viencek made four saves for Greenfield. The Wave had an 8-6 corner advantage. 

Frontier 2, Agawam 0 — Ashlie Galenski and Macy DeMaio scored for the Redhawks, who knocked off the Brownies in South Deerfield Monday. 

Stella Heflin dished an assist while Kyra Richards made one save for Frontier. 

Girls soccer

Athol 3, Renaissance 0 — Scoreless at the half, Hannah Cardosa came alive for the Bears. 

Cardosa recorded a hat trick in the second half to propel Athol to a victory in Springfield Monday. Olivia Horrigan recorded an assist in the win. 

Greenfield 5, Pathfinder 1 — Elderina Cecunjanin scored a pair of goals in the first half and added two more in the second to cap off a four-goal performance, leading the Green Wave to a victory over the host Pioneers on Monday. 

Tayler Bergeron added a goal and an assist, Zephyr Jetzon dished two assists, Sarah McCloud tallied an assist while Annie Cobileanschi made five saves for Greenfield. 

Franklin Tech 1, Pioneer 1 — Dzelila Cecunjanin scored for the Panthers in the 34th minute before Mia Marigliano scored with six minutes left in the half for the Eagles, with the contest ending in a 1-1 tie in Turners. 

Mady Lynde assisted the Marigliano goal, Kylee Gamache made six saves while Kaelyn Mclean, Ariel Peters and Alyssa Peters played well on defense for Tech. Kyler McClelland stopped eight shots for Pioneer.  

Volleyball

Athol 3, Hampden Charter 1 — Olivia Mayer recorded six kills and seven aces and Giana Vaillancourt added six kills, 10 assists and three aces, lifting the Bears to a 25-21, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16 win over Hampden Charter on Monday. 

Abby Spooner put down five kills and two blocks while Evelyn Robinson had four kills and three assists in the win. 

The Athol JV team fell, 3-0. 

Renaissance 3, Pioneer 0 — Sophia Wood had two aces, five digs and one block in the Panthers’ 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 loss to Renaissance on Monday in Northfield. 

Jacobia Tyminski had two aces and six digs, Kiara Gruzskowski made nine digs to go along with two kills and two blocks while Oceana Duclos had one kill and three digs for Pioneer. 

Weekend results

Boys soccer

Turners 3, Athol 1 — Moises Barrayes, David Klempner-Siano and Yolvin Ovalle-Mejia each scored in the opening 25 minutes of the game for the Thunder, who beat the Bears in Athol Saturday. 

Karim Thompson scored off an assist from Seidou in the 58th minute for Athol. 

Girls soccer

Athol 1, Pioneer 0 — Bear Aubrey Brockney scored in the 58th minute for the lone goal of the game, propelling Athol to a victory over the Panthers in Athol Saturday. 

Ava Adams made six saves in the win while Kyler McClelland stopped 16 shots for Pioneer. 

Volleyball

 Athol 3, Ware 1 — Giana Vaillancourt led the way with six kills, seven aces and two assists while Evelyn Robinson tallied six aces and two kills in the Bears’ 12-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Ware on Saturday in Athol. 

Ella Reed had five aces and four assists while Olivia Mayer recorded two kills and three aces in the triumph. 

Deerfield results

Here are the Deerfield Academy results from Saturday: boys soccer beat Kent (2-0), volleyball beat Greenwich (2-0) and Milton (2-0), girls soccer tied Pomfret (0-0), football fell to Brunswick (38-13), field hockey knocked off Phillips Exeter (1-0) while boys water polo fell to St. John’s Prep (18-15).
