Local roundup: Greenfield’s Katie Haselton helps Framingham State win MASCAC title, earn NCAA tourney berth

Buoyed by an 11-point outing from Greenfield’s Katie Haselton, the Framingham State women’s basketball team captured a conference title and a spot in the NCAA Division 3 Tournament on Sunday.

Haselton and the top-seeded Rams outscored Bridgewater State 22-9 in the fourth quarter en route to a 74-62 win to claim the MASCAC Championship in front of a standing room only crowd at Logan Gymnasium in Framingham on Sunday.

The Rams captured their third title in four seasons and earned the MASCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Framingham (24-2) will travel to play at host University of Scranton (25-2) in the opening round of the tournament on Friday at 8:15 p.m. Ohio Northern and Marymount (Va.) are also in the Scranton regional, and the winners of both games will meet on Saturday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

A junior criminology major, Haselton is averaging 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season for the Rams, starting all 26 games.

Brantley Godfry tallied the lone goal for Allstates Material Group Franklin County Hockey Association 10U White in an 8-1 loss to NBYHL Black Bears in Squirt Division action on Saturday at Foote Vietnam Veterans Rink in North Adams.

Sam Edson had the assist on the goal for FCHA.

In action on Sunday, Godfry and Noah Stoffolano tallied in a 2-2 tie with Ludlow at Smead Rink in Springfield.

Harper Coffin, Natalie Palasciano and Nichloas Brisson played well for FCHA.


Deerfield results

It was a busy weekend of games for the Big Green.

On Friday night, in their final regular season game, boys varsity hockey defeated Westminster 6-2 and boys varsity basketball defeated rival Choate Rosemary Hall, 76-70. Girls varsity basketball fell to Choate 51-33.

On Saturday, girls hockey tied Loomis Chaffee, 2-2, 

At the US Squash High School Nationals in Philadelphia, the girls varsity squash team defeated Exeter 4-3 in their opening round, then lost a nail bitter to Spence 4-3 in the second round.

The boys varsity squash team dropped and incredible match to Taft, 5-2. They returned to the courts to face Choate in the second round and defeated the Wild Boars, 5-2. In the third round, the boys defeated McCallie 4-3.
