A pair of local athletes snatched MIAA Division 6 Outdoor Track & Field Championship titles on Friday at Tufts University in Medford.
The opening day of the championship meet saw five field and eight track events take place, with Mahar’s Mitchell Krasco and Frontier’s Ben Cachiguango walking away with first place medals.
Krasco won the boys triple jump at the Western Mass. Div. 2 championship a week ago and entered Friday as the No. 2 seed in the event. That didn’t matter to the senior, as he hit his best mark of the season with a leap of 47 feet, 6½ inches to take first overall on the day. The jump came on his fifth of six attempts.
It was the top leap in the entire state this season, and beat Leicester’s Jeremiah Kinsumba by over a foot (46-5¼). Krasco has a chance to earn more medals during the second day of the meet at Tufts on Sunday, as he is the No. 5 seed in the 110-meter hurdles.
Cachiguango came into the day the favorite to win the 400-meter hurdles and he didn’t disappoint. The senior — who won the event at the Western Mass. Div. 2 meet as well — completed the race in a time of 55.73 seconds, beating out Lunenburg’s Michael Laine by nearly a full second (56.70) to take first place on the day.
Like Krasco, Cachiguango isn’t done yet as he is the top seed in the 110 hurdles on Sunday, an event he also won at Western Mass.
A number of local athletes earned top five finishes on Friday.
Mohawk Trail’s Morgan Raffa took home a Western Mass. title in girls discus last week and on Friday, earned a second place state finish with a toss of 100-8.
