Artist Jess Star displaying work at NMH

GILL — Artwork by interdisciplinary artist Jess Star is now on display at the Rhodes Arts Center gallery at Northfield Mount Hermon School.

The show, “Tertiary Effects,” will run through Sept. 29. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Star is a former western Massachusetts resident who studied art at Greenfield Community College before relocating to Los Angeles, where they are pursuing a master’s degree at the Otis College of Art and Design. They describe their work as “mov[ing] through a cannibalistic process … highlight[ing] the absurdity within the fallout of large systems of power.”

“Tertiary Effects” includes sculptures, prints and drawings, many of them rendered in fabric.

“Ships that cannot sail, horses with too many legs and objects made from absurd materials question the success of success,” Star writes in an artist statement. “Fabrics and bright colors are used as a warning and to capture our attention. These repeating themes have included symbols of substantial power, wealth and capacity.”
