Seniors invited to apply for Tax Work-Off Program

NORTHFIELD – Seniors who are more than 60 years old and own their own home in Northfield are eligible to submit an application to take part in the Senior Tax Work-Off Program starting July 1.

Under this program, Northfield department heads can seek help with municipal responsibilities from seniors, who in turn are credited $15 per hour toward a reduction in their tax bills of up to $1,000 per year. Applications are available at the Town Hall in the Assessor’s Office and Senior Center beginning July 1 and completed applications must be returned by July 31.

Appropriate tax forms and CORI background checks are required.

Next puzzle swap set for July 5

NORTHFIELD — Free used puzzles will be available at Dickinson Memorial Library on Saturday, July 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Attendees are advised to park in the back and enter through the side door of the library. Turn left to find the Community Room.

Participants are invited to take as many puzzles as they want, and can keep them as long as they need. The puzzle swap is offered monthly.

NORTHFIELD – The Northfield Senior Center’s next monthly meal will be held Wednesday, July 9, at 12:30 p.m.

The menu will include Asian stir-fried seasonal vegetables served over basmati rice and dessert. The cost is $7.

Reservations are required by July 2 by calling 413-498-2901, ext. 123. The meal is limited to 20 people.

American Red Cross rep to speak at Senior Center

NORTHFIELD – Luca Calvani, Community Disaster Program manager for Worcester and Franklin counties with the American Red Cross, will speak at the Northfield Senior Center on Wednesday, July 16, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Calvani will share information on safety preparedness. The program will also offer a hands-only CPR lesson and will end with a question-and-answer period.

Northfield church to fete 200th with barbecue

NORTHFIELD — The Trinitarian Congregational Church will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, July 19, from noon to 4 p.m. as part of its Bicentennial Summer Fest. The event will take place on church grounds at 147 Main St.

In addition to the barbecue, there will be musical entertainment, craft exhibitors, a silent auction, face painting, a bounce house and other children’s activities.

The menu includes rolls, baked beans, potato salad, local vegetables, beverages and dessert. This menu plus a quarter-chicken is $15, a half-chicken is $20 and a hot dog or veggie dog is $10. To-go meals will also be available.

Tables will be set up both inside Fellowship Hall and outside, in the lower parking lot. The event will be held rain or shine. 

Advance registration is strongly encouraged by calling 413-498-5839 by Friday, July 11. Walk-ins are welcome.

Walking group heading to NH

NORTHFIELD – The Northfield Senior Center’s Happy Feet walking group will head to the Fort Hill Recreational Rail Trail in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, on Monday, July 21, at 10 a.m.

Walkers will meet at the trailhead to park. Participants will be carpooling to start the walk at the Dole parking lot’s trailhead. From Dole, they will walk to the Fort Hill parking lot, which is 2 miles away. Walkers are advised to bring water and insect repellent if needed.

This is a flat, grassy trek. Heavy rain or thunderstorms with lightening will cancel. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

Learn to makecyanotype prints in Senior Center workshop

NORTHFIELD – Barb King will lead an art class on making cyanotype prints at the Northfield Senior Center on Tuesday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m.

Participants will learn the basics of making cyanotype prints by placing objects directly on specially treated papers and exposing them to sunlight. These blue and white images will be created with common household objects as well as plant materials. Each participant will bring home several prints.

Workshop attendees are advised to bring objects in fun shapes such as kitchen implements, and natural items like ferns, grasses and flowers. Some objects will also be provided.

The cost is $10 and the workshop is limited to 10 participants. Register by July 17 by calling 413-498-2901, ext. 123.

Ed Hogan featured performer at Memory Cafe

NORTHFIELD — Singer/guitarist Ed Hogan will perform during the Northfield Senior Center’s monthly Memory Cafe on Wednesday, July 23, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

This program provides support and socialization for adults dealing with memory-related issues and their caregivers. A light lunch will be provided.

Can, bottle drive to benefit Senior Center

NORTHFIELD – Residents are encouraged to donate returnable cans and bottles on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drive-thru donations will be accepted behind Town Hall at 69 Main St.

Money raised will benefit the Northfield Senior Center’s programs.

Brass quintet to perform July 28

BERNARDSTON – The Bernardston Council on Aging will host a free concert by the Ragtime Five brass quintet at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 28, at the Bernardston Senior Center.

The Ragtime Five will perform modern arrangements of music from 1890 to 1920, including genres of ragtime, swing and marches.

Dinner will follow at 4 p.m. Call 413-648-5319 for dinner reservations. The suggested donation is $3.50 per person.

Learn watercolor techniques at Senior Center

BERNARDSTON – My Art Company will present two workshops on watercolor techniques on Tuesdays, July 15 and July 22, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Bernardston Senior Center.

Workshop participants will work with brush strokes to create texturing while painting wildlife, and use light and dark tones to create depth. Attendees are advised to bring their Funto paint boxes and liner brushes if they have them. Round brushes are ideal. Paint will be available.

Space is limited to 10 participants. Sign up for one workshop only by calling 413-648-5413. The recommended donation is $5.

Workshop participants who don’t finish their paintings or want to fine-tune their techniques more can also visit the Senior Center to continue their work on Tuesday, July 29, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sign up is required.

Bernardston walking group meets three times per week

BERNARDSTON – The Steppin’ Out casual walking group meets at the Bernardston Senior Center parking lot on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. Each walk, at an easy pace, last 30 to 45 minutes.
