MONTAGUE — Longtime public servant Wendy Bogusz is stepping into a new chapter of her career with Montague, this time as town clerk.
Bogusz, 57, has been working for the town since 1997, starting with the Building Department until 2000, when she became the executive assistant to the Selectboard. She joined Montague after graduating from Greenfield High School, attending Greenfield Community College and working in manufacturing.
Having seen the hustle and bustle of the Town Clerk’s Office by working just across the hall, Bogusz has been interested in the work the staff there have been doing and felt it was the right time to make the transition when the town clerk position became available earlier this year.
“I was just always listening to the conversations while I was in there. It just seemed interesting listening to them help people with their … birth certificates and everything,” Bogusz reflected. “It just caught my attention and I like to help people.”
Bogusz, who will move into her new role on July 1 with a salary of $75,857, will take the reins from interim Town Clerk Tina Sulda, who took over the responsibilities temporarily after Kathern “Beanie” Pierce retired in February. Sulda will return to her previous role as assistant town clerk.
Having worked in an administrative capacity as executive assistant to the Selectboard, Bogusz said she feels she’s an organized person who has an open mind and is able to adapt in different situations. She anticipates she’ll be working more with the public in this job.
“I think it is going to be a more hands-on job, whereas now I feel like I’m more in the background doing work,” Bogusz said. “This will be more up-front, helping customers every day.”
Additionally, she’s interested in the problem-solving element of the job, having seen how the recent town election played out from the start when polls opened, up until the end of the day when poll workers were still counting votes for write-in candidates.

“Watching the election and seeing the beginning of the day to the end of the day, and seeing how the election turns out,” she said, “and the different processes … I like the challenges that go with it.”
Bogusz will be working with Sulda throughout the transition, as well as retired Town Clerk Deb Bourbeau, who will serve as a consultant to help Bogusz in her training. The town is in the process of hiring a new executive assistant, and Bogusz said while that position is being filled, Administrative Assistant Angie Amidon will be helping out.
