LEVERETT — Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Gleaves will perform at 194 Long Plain Road (Route 63) on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m.
Gleaves, originally from Wytheville, Virginia, began playing old-time Appalachian music as a teenager. “Ain’t We Brothers,” his debut recording, was featured by National Public Radio and the Guardian. Since 2015, Gleaves has released five more studio recordings.
As a solo artist, Gleaves has toured in Ireland, England, Italy, Canada and throughout the U.S. He currently serves as Appalachian instruments instructor and bluegrass ensemble director at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky.

Naturalist to lead plant walkLEVERETT — Naturalist Jean Bergstrom will lead a plant walk in the forests and fields around the Leverett Library on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Dickinson College dean’s list includes Deerfield studentCARLISLE, Pa. — Deerfield resident Ella Iona Macphie Hynds, a rising junior biochemistry and molecular biology major at Dickinson College, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. A graduate of Deerfield Academy, she is the daughter of Peter and Catriona Hynds of Deerfield.
All students earning a position on the dean’s list must achieve a grade point average of 3.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

MADISON, Wis. — Deerfield student Luke Shields was named to the dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the spring semester. Shields is a student in the College of Engineering.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete at least 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own grade point average requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.
