BERNARDSTON — A New Hampshire teen was taken into custody on Monday morning after allegedly taking a parent’s vehicle from Hinsdale, attempting to hit police officers as she made her way through Vermont and causing property damage at Kringle Candle Co. on South Street.

The Bernardston Police Department announced on its Facebook page that the girl was taken into custody and transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for a mental health evaluation. No injuries resulted from the incident.

Due to her age, the subject’s name is not being released and Bernardston Police had no further comment on Monday. Hinsdale Police Chief Melissa Evans said motor vehicle violations will be filed in New Hampshire’s juvenile justice system.

The teen girl allegedly stole the vehicle in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, at around 7 a.m., and attempted to strike officers who used their cruisers to try to block her from traveling over the new Gen. John Stark Memorial Bridge and into Brattleboro, Vermont. Bernardston officers became involved in “a low-speed pursuit” and stop sticks were used in town due to safety concerns, the Facebook post states. Evans said the ordeal lasted about an hour.

Evans said the girl struck three Brattleboro cruisers — one in Brattleboro and one in Bernardston. She did not know the extent of the property damage at Kringle Candle. Attempts to contact anyone at the business were unsuccessful on Monday.

The Bernardston Police Department’s Facebook post thanked the police departments of Brattleboro, Gill and Greenfield, as well as the Bernardston Fire Department and Northfield EMS.
