GREENFIELD — The third annual “Give the Gift of Living” gear and goods drive, organized by the Franklin County and North Quabbin Emergency Services for Unhoused Individuals Task Force, collected 26 tents, 23 sleeping bags, 27 sleeping pads and three blankets to distribute to homeless community members.

The drive, held from Nov. 22 to Dec. 22, collected gear, other goods, and money that will be used to purchase items to distribute to those who do not have the means or access to emergency shelter services. Debra McLauglin, coordinator of the Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region, said $475 in cash had been donated as of Friday afternoon.

The donating link is still open at tinyurl.com/MoneyDonations. The drive runs concurrent with the Interfaith Council of Franklin County’s Housing Assistance Fund.

“It’s not always easy for folks to know where to turn for help,” McLaughlin said. “We are deeply grateful for the support we have received.”

McLaughlin said this year’s effort was more based on the needs that had been identified in the homeless community. The only emergency shelter in Franklin County and the North Quabbin region is currently full.

McLaughlin explained the drive started in 2022, prompted by the work started by Larry Thomas, of the Wildflower Alliance.
