UMass women’s basketball: St. Joseph’s downs Minutewomen, 67-55

A slow second quarter sank the UMass women’s basketball team in its 67-55 loss to Saint Joseph’s on Saturday at the Mullins Center.

The Hawks outscored the Minutewomen 18-8 in the second frame, while the scoring difference in the other three quarters was two points or less.

Saturday’s loss halted a two-game win streak for UMass in Atlantic-10 action after wins over St. Bonaventure and La Salle.

UMass (9-9) got another strong performance from Megan Olbrys as the junior produced 21 points while shooting 10-of-11 from the floor.

Freshman Yahmani McKayle reached double figures for the Minutewomen as well with 11 points and also added five assists to tie Chinenye Odenigbo for the team lead during the game.

Shots from deep benefited the visitors as Saint Joe’s sank 40.74 percent of its 3-pointers while UMass shot 30 percent from beyond the arc.

Laura Ziegler led the Hawks with 23 points, plus made 5-of-11 3-pointers. Gabby Casey (12 points), Mackenzie Smith (11 points) and Rhian Stokes (11 points) also played well for Saint Joe’s, which improved to 14-4.

The Minutewomen will travel to Rhode Island next to take on the Rams on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
