SOUTH DEERFIELD — The former Polish deli on Thayer Street has been given new life.

After numerous health violations shuttered the longtime BBA Deli Market at 39A Thayer St. last fall, the building was cleaned out by the landlord, Hugh Manheim of Whately’s Manheim Farm.

Finally, after months of work, the new International Cafe and Deli opened its doors to customers last week. Manheim and his staff hope to follow in the footsteps of the beloved BBA Deli Market by offering inexpensive bites from a wide range of backgrounds.

“We’re trying a new adventure,” the longtime farmer said at the business on Tuesday.

While the store is open, Manheim said there is still work to be done, as he is waiting for the sign to be delivered and hoping to fill out the shelves.

“We’re kind of playing it by ear,” he said.

The International Cafe and Deli offers everything from hamburgers and hot dogs to quesadillas and parsnip fries. Some remaining canned and jarred goods from the BBA Deli Market are also leftover, as well as hanging plants and fresh produce from Manheim Farm at wholesale prices.

Manheim has owned the building since 2017 — he joked he purchased the parcel because of the 8 acres of farmland behind it — and had a strong relationship with then-owners Bozena Giedrowicz and Alina Warzynski. The two women built the business’ reputation on inexpensive Polish goods and Manheim said he is hoping to provide a similar experience to folks, just with different cuisine.

The International Cafe and Deli is currently open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, Manheim said he hopes to open for breakfast in the next couple of weeks, which will see the store open for business at 6 or 7 a.m. instead. Takeout dinners will also be sold.

As the restaurant gets settled, Manheim said he is open to community feedback. If customers want a specific food item, they can ask.

“It’s a process,” Manheim said. “The most important thing is the food’s good and this is a friendly place to come and shop.”
