GREENFIELD — After reaching the quarterfinals and semifinals of the MIAA Div. 5 state tournament the last two years, the Greenfield baseball team is hoping this is another year where it plays its best at the most important time of the season.
If Wednesday’s Western Mass. Class C quarterfinal contest against Franklin Tech is any indication, the Green Wave are once again heating up at the right time.
Third-seeded Greenfield got a great performance on the hill from senior Caleb Thomas, who struck out eight and scattered just two hits to lead the Green Wave into the semifinals with an 11-1 five-inning victory over the sixth-seeded Eagles at Vets Field.
“Caleb pitched well,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “We hit the ball and executed today. Hopefully we can continue with all that. This is when you want to be peaking. I don’t know what it is but that’s what it’s been these last couple years.”
The Green Wave (12-7) move on to play No. 2 Westfield Tech in the semifinals, the Tigers coming off a 9-1 win over Easthampton Wednesday.
For Franklin Tech (10-8), it was a combination of not being able to get anything going at the plate and some errors on the field that ended their Western Mass. run early.
“Hats off to CT,” Eagles coach Dan Prasol said. “He threw a great game. Greenfield came to play and we had some mental errors. It’s hard to win games when you walk the leadoff batter twice but our season if far from over.”
Chase Zraunig opened the bottom of the first with a walk, Thomas singled before Logan Moore grounded out to score Zraunig and give the Wave the opening lead of the game. Luca Siano followed with a single to drive in Thomas and give Greenfield a 2-0 lead after one.

Tech now turns its focus to its contest against Athol on Friday at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford, that game to decide the Bi-County North title.
“We have a big game Friday,” Prasol said. “We’ll practice hard [Thursday] and hopefully turn things around. One game doesn’t define our season. Hats off to Greenfield.
