Trailing 4-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning, it seemed like Greenfield Post 81 was headed toward a third consecutive loss to open its American Legion Senior Division season on Friday night.
But Post 81 rallied, scoring four times in the inning to force extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Braeden Tsipenyuk smacked the game-winning single to lift Greenfield to a walk-off 5-4 victory at Vets Field.
Greenfield (2-1) was sparked by an RBI single from Hugh Cyhowski in the seventh, while Hayden Girard had two hits out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup.
Caleb Thomas struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings of solid work on the mound, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits. Arthur Fitzpatrick came on in relief and wound up getting the win, striking out four while allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings.
Post 81 heads to Westfield for a key road game on Monday.
