Greenfield’s Asa Bouchard had himself a tournament at the Buffalo River Classic last weekend.

Competing with the Springfield Junior Thunderbirds in the 14U Gold Division, Bouchard finished the tournament — which took place exclusively on outdoor rinks — with four goals and five assists to help the Thunderbirds earn the gold medal.

“It was different,” Bouchard said. “The ice was a little soft, it was snowing out and there was snow all over the ice. It was cold but an amazing experience.”

The Thunderbirds started the tournament with a 2-2 tie against the Columbus Ohio Junior Blue Jackets, went on to earn a 2-0 win over the Rochester Michigan Rattlers before beating the Tampa Junior Bulls, 4-2.

After a loss to the North Pittsburgh Wildcats, the Thunderbirds got their revenge against the Wildcats in the championship game. Trailing 3-1 with 1:29 to go, the Thunderbirds scored twice to force overtime and found the game-winner 33 seconds into the OT period to head home with a first place trophy. Bouchard had a goal and three assists in the championship game.

“It was a great comeback,” Bouchard said. “I never expected it. It’s a way different style of hockey outside of Massachusetts and Connecticut. There’s pretty good hockey out there.”

Bouchard and the Thunderbirds are closing out their regular season this weekend before trying to go on a playoff run after.
