Evelyn King drained the game-winning 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Athol girls basketball team to a thrilling 35-34 victory over Hopkins Academy in a Franklin Tech Summer Basketball League contest on Thursday night in Turners Falls.
Ava Adams led the way with 18 points for Athol, while Sadie Wilcox (seven points), King (five), Abby Spooner (three) and Maya Hamilton (two) also factored into the scoring for the Bears.
Hopkins’ Vivian Higuera scored 17 to pace her side, Laney Crutch scored 11, Daniella Valle-Dardano scored four, and Cailie Edwards scored two.
In other action Thursday, Franklin Tech defeated Greenfield, 48-19, thanks to 16 points from Brayleigh Burgh, 13 from Sophia Jagodzinski and 12 from Sarah Beckwith. Abi Dobias added five and Samantha Duncan scored two in the win.
For Greenfield, Kyra Tamin scored seven, Haddie Connelly scored three, and Ivy Bettencourt and Sofia Ruggeri each scored two.
In the nightcap, Pioneer got past Mahar, 17-10, in a defensive struggle. For Pioneer, Jacobia Tyminski and Maggie Tsipenyuk each had four, Deveney Pillsbury and Kyler McLelland each had three, Dasia Mitchell had two, and Kiara Gueszkowski had one point.
Mahar’s Stasi Sanders and Jaya Eady each scored four and Taylor Paluk added two.

It’s time for the annual Beacon Clay Court Classic sponsored by West County Cider.
The singles tournament begins Monday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Beacon Field Clay Courts. Players are asked to arrive by 5 p.m.
The tourney costs $10 for Greenfield Tennis Association members and $15 for non-members. It’s free for high school and college players.

All matches will be best two-of-three sets with a tiebreak. It’s a single elimination draw, and players must start play by 5:30 each day or be subject to default. Players must be available to play all week or until the draw is completed.

Franklin County Technical School is looking to hire a JV/varsity assistant boys soccer coach for the upcoming fall 2025 season.

Timmons-Messer League
The team of Rick Stempel and Curt White notched the low gross of 34 at Wednesday’s Timmons-Messer League at Northfield Golf Club.
Andy Harrison and Jim Laford were second with a 36. Match medalist honors were shared between Dan Arsenault, White and Jeff Seymour who all shot 37.
Dave Brady and Dan Arsenault won a match of cards to take home low net honors (26), and Jack Letourneau and Doug Turner settled for second with a 26.
Closest to the pin on No. 6 was Neal Slocombe (10 feet, 8 inches) and Nate Pecor on No. 7 (4-6).
