Good morning!Less than five months ago the UMass hockey team lost by a goal to Western Michigan at the regional finals in Fargo, N.D., to end with a respectable 21-14-5 record. Almost a year to the day earlier, UMass lost in double overtime to Denver at the NCAA regionals in Springfield. Their record was a nearly identical 20-14-3.

Good morning!Now comes Joe Harasymiak, bearded and bellowing, mandated by the administration to put fans in the seats and wins in the record book. Coach Joe comes from Rutgers where he was the defensive coordinator for three years. He was hired by UMass in December when promises and proclamations are meaningless, and in three weeks he will lead the Minutemen onto the gridiron to play Temple at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

In the recent Wimbledon Championship much was made of American tennis player Amanda Anisimova’s departure from tennis two years prior. Although Amanda lost in the finals, she had to win six matches to get there, defeating the world’s number one in the semi-finals. In 2023 Amanda had enough, her tennis was struggling, not getting any better; what was once a game was a chore. She took time off and dropped out, did other things. Eight months later she regained her vigor and began winning. The Wimbledon final was the culmination of that return.

The Minutemen battled through the thick air and puddles of sweat and were all smiles as they flew around the field under the direction of first-year head coach Joe Harasymiak.

GREENFIELD — On Monday night, the Valley Blue Sox fell 5-2 to the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks to drop them to a half-game behind Danbury for the final spot in the NECBL playoffs with just three games left — including Tuesday night’s bout with the Mystic Schooners. Several Valley players didn’t get home from the Vineyard until 2 a.m.

Northfield Golf Club held its Club Championship over the weekend, with Jesse Morgan taking down River Kuhn in a three hole playoff to win the men’s championship. Both Morgan and Kuhn finished with two round scores of 146 to force the playoff.

Just over a month ago, the Oklahoma City Thunder outlasted the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to capture the franchise’s first championship since the team moved to Oklahoma City from Seattle in 2008. Confetti fell inside the Paycom Center as Thunder players celebrated on stage and accepted the Larry O’Brien trophy.
Good morning!If Ted Williams was to rise from the dead and see that Tuesday’s All Star game was decided by a “swing off,” his response wouldn’t have been suitable for print in a family newspaper. In Ted’s day, swing-offs happened at Benny Goodman concerts.
