Three local cross country teams will get to test themselves against the best in the state on Saturday.
The Mohawk Trail girls, Frontier boys and Frontier girls cross country teams qualified for the MIAA Division 3 Championships, which is slated for Saturday at Fort Devens. The girls race starts at 2 p.m., and the boys will follow at 2:45 p.m.
The Redhawks and Warrior girls qualified thanks to strong showings at the state qualifying meet last weekend at Wrentham Development Center.
The qualifying meet featured three heats, and the top seven teams in each heat qualified for states. The Mohawk Trail girls got in with a seventh place finish in its heat while the Frontier boys earned third in its heat. The Frontier girls placed eighth in its heat, but qualified for states as the wild card entry as the fastest eighth place finishing team.
Greenfield will also be represented, as junior Dylan Breiwick qualified as an individual following a 27th-place showing in his heat a week ago.
For the Redhawk boys, Evan Hedlund is a runner to keep an eye on.
The sophomore took third in his heat with a time of 15 minutes, 56 seconds last week, placing him fourth overall across the three heats. While it might be tough to catch Hamilton-Wenham’s Ben Rich (15:36) and Monument Mountain’s Everett Pacheco (15:38), a top five overall finish is well within reach for Hedlund.
Fellow Frontier runner Luke Howard is another one to watch, having the 11th fastest time overall at the qualifying meet last week (16:19). Oliver Brown, Hengxi Yue and Charles Dennis also scored for the Redhawks a week ago.
