Frontier Regional School grads ready to break barriers

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Despite persistent rain showers, 92 Frontier Regional High School seniors graduated on Friday and were encouraged to break barriers.
The Class of 2025, their family and friends, school administrators and community leaders gathered inside the school’s track for the commencement ceremony in rain coats, with their umbrellas held close to shield from the increasingly intense showers.
Although the evening rain fluctuated between a drip and a monsoon, this didn’t deter Class President Delaney Fifield, National Honor Society Representative Sasha Malo, and commencement speaker Rep. Natalie Blais (D-Deerfield) from speaking loud and clear with their advice and wisdom for the graduates.
Fifield brought a sense of levity to her speech, talking about senior class memories that included students losing their Dunkin’ coffee if they were late to class, seeing sports teams winning league and state titles, or how a no-phones policy became all too real on the first day of senior year.
“This class always knew how to have a good time. We never took an opportunity to spend time together for granted,” she said to her class. “We all came together to support each other in all aspects of our lives. This class will most definitely be talked about for years to come.”
Malo also spoke about her favorite memories of the senior class while also commending their achievements in the National Honors Society and the class as a whole.
Blais, who the senior class elected to be their commencement speaker, encouraged the students in a three-minute speech to speak up for themselves as young people, dream big, uphold democracy and break through barriers. To illustrate this, she told the story of her hometown on the border of the U.S. and Canada in Vermont, and the work of Martha Stewart Haskell who co-founded the Haskell Free Library and Opera House that sits on an international border.
“I am confident that you will push through boundaries, just as Martha Stewart Haskell did when she constructed a library and opera house across an international boundary,” Blais said, “That you will not build barriers, but rather break right through them to strengthen our communities and ensure that our nation is a better and more inclusive place for us all.” Blais said.
