GREENFIELD — After a nine day break from game action, it wasn’t the return to the ice the Greenfield hockey team hoped for on Monday.

Things started out well for the Wave against visiting Oakmont, as it took Greenfield just two minutes and 19 seconds to light up the scoreboard to take the opening lead of the game.

That was the final time the Green Wave would find the back of the net. The Spartans evened the score before the first period buzzer sounded and took the lead in the second. Oakmont added an empty net goal in the final seconds as Greenfield fell, 3-1, at Collins-Moylan.

“We had nine days between games and it’s always hard to have that many games off during the season,” Green Wave coach Adam Bouchard said. “Oakmont played four times since our last game so they came in more game ready. Take our hats off to Oakmont. They played a fantastic game and shut us down. We looked like we were rusty. It’s no excuse. We certainly didn’t play Green Wave hockey and they did a good job to get the win.”

Cam Hopkins got Greenfield (7-3-1) on the board to open the game. Jake Knight got the puck down low, fed it over to Matt Garvin who passed it back to Hopkins at the point. The shot made it through the traffic in front and in, giving the Wave a lead just minutes into the contest.

Unbeaten in four straight heading into Monday’s contest, Bouchard said his team might have gotten a little ahead of itself after the early goal.

“We got the first one and we looked at it and thought it was going to be one of those games,” Bouchard said. “They threw it right back in our face. Great job by that Oakmont team.”

Greenfield went on the penalty kill later in the first period but just two seconds after killing it off, Oakmont (5-6) evened the score.

After a slew of failed clearances, Kyle Forrest got the puck up top and fired a shot that was tipped in by Logan Smith, tying the game with 6:47 to go in the first.

It was another turnover that led to the Spartans’ second goal. Brady Dunn grabbed a pass in the Wave end, sent it over to Joe Catalfano and Catalfano dished a cross crease pass to James Hylan, who knocked it home to put Oakmont ahead, 2-1, with 5:39 to go in the second.

Greenfield had it chances in the third. On the kill, Shawn Baumann jumped a pass and was alone for the breakaway, but Spartan goalie Max O’Brien came up with a big save to keep his team ahead.

Greenfield went on the power play with 4:13 to go and despite generating chances, were unable to find the back of the net.

With the goalie pulled Catalfano got behind the Green Wave defense and finished in the empty net with four seconds to play to seal the victory.

“We had our opportunities,” Bouchard said. “They played a nice collapsing defense. At the end of the day they executed their game plan and we played like a bunch of individuals instead of playing Green Wave hockey.”

Next up for Greenfield is a road contest against Minnechaug on Thursday, with puck drop set for 8:30 p.m. at Olympia Ice Center.
