TURNERS FALLS – The Athol golf team went through the expected struggles of having a group of brand new golfers when it brought its program back last fall, but the lessons learned along the way are paying dividends this season, evident in how the Bears played in their season opener on Tuesday against Turners Falls. 

Athol’s Ethan Heuer was the match medalist with a 39 while Dominik St. Andre and Brandon Adams each carded a 46, helping the Bears pull out a 181-212 victory over the Thunder at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club.

Owen Stoddard rounded out the scoring with a 50 for Athol. 

Darian Burnett (41), Austin Smarr (54), Cayden Cogswell (56) and Andrew Eichorn (61) scored for Turners. 

Franklin Tech 167, Hopkins 208 — Gabe Mota and Jack Day had big days at Thomas Memorial for the Eagles, each carding a 36 to lift Tech to a triumph over the Golden Hawks. 

Grady Deery (43) and Ayron Hemmingway Jr. (52) closed out the scoring for Franklin Tech. Hopkins’ Ryley Regan was the match medalist with a 34. 

Frontier 168, Monson 189 — Ryan Cetto was the match medalist with a 40, lifting the Redhawks to a triumph over the   Mustangs at Quaboag Country Club on Tuesday. 

Cam Skiffington (42), Addy Wood (43) and  Brady Wood (43) rounded out the scoring for Frontier.

Pioneer 179, Easthampton 217 — Bradyen Thayer was the match medalist after carding a 40 at Northfield Golf Club, helping Pioneer cruise to a victory over the visiting Eagles on Tuesday. 

Ben Werner (43), Ethan Mauthe (44) and Carter Gerry (52) completed the scoring for the Panthers. 

Mohawk Trail 181, SICS 237 — Phineas Tuttman led the way with a 43, earning him match medalist and helping propel the Warriors to a victory over the Bulldogs at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield on Tuesday. 

Douglas Wilcox (44), Logan Moore (46) and Conner Bergeron (48) also scored for Mohawk Trail in the win. 

Girls soccer

SICS 2, Mahar 0 — Allanah Chambers tallied twice in the first half for the Bulldogs and the Sens were unable to answer, with SICS picking up a victory at the Woodward Complex Tuesday. 

Makayla Butler made five saves while Bella Malo, Autumn Cleveland, Lindsey Woodbury and Stella Moore played well on defense to limit the SICS attack. 

Field hockey

Smith Academy 3, Mahar 0 — Shae Moulton, Bella Gavron and Sophia Jagodzinski each tallied for the Falcons in a victory over the Senators in Orange Tuesday. 

Westfield 4, Mohawk Trail 0 — The Bombers put a pair of goals in during the first quarter and tacked two on late in the fourth, with the Warriors falling in Buckland on Tuesday. 

Redyn Gutierrez made 14 saves while Izzy Finn stopped one shot for Mohawk Trail. Sofiya Slocik Gritzner, Avery Johnston and Jayda Waters helped limit the Westfield offense for the Warriors. 

Boys cross country

Frontier 20, Mohawk Trail 37
Frontier 17, Pioneer 49
Mohawk Trail 20, Pioneer 39 —
 Luke Howard was the first runner to cross the finish line (16 minutes, 35 seconds) while teammates Evan Hedlund (16:36) and Charles Dennis (16:44) were the next two to cross, helping Frontier pick up a pair of wins in a meet in Northfield Tuesday. 

Oliver Brown (seventh, 17:18) and Adam Paul (ninth, 18:13) also finished in the top 10 for the Redhawks. 

Pioneer’s Ryan Spofford placed fourth (16:45) while Peter Healy (fifth, 16:53), Rex Kuoppala (sixth, 17:10), Carson Richardson (eighth, 17:25) and Aymeric Loucka (10th, 18:39). 

Girls cross country

Sylvie DiBartolomeo placed first (19:07) while fellow Frontier runners Liv Christensen (fifth, 20:50), Madelyn Antes (sixth, 21:54), Maia Christensen (seventh, 22:03), Sasha Malo (eighth, 22:11), Perla Ordaz (ninth, 22:27) and Phoebe Radner (10th, 22:43) also finished in the top 10, helping the Redhawks earn a pair of wins on Tuesday in Northfield. 

Mohawk Trail’s Anya Read placed second (19:44) while Virginia Krezmien came in third (19:54) and Natalie Lanoue took fourth (20:33). Mia Fowler Shaw was Pioneer’s top finisher (24:39). 

Gateway 19, Greenfield 36

Greenfield 15, Hampden Charter 50 —
Alice Fortin placed seventh (30:16) and Rose Fortin placed ninth overall (31:59) for the Green Wave, which walked away with a 1-2 day in a four-team meet at Littleville Dam on Tuesday. 

Monday late results

Frontier 2, Chicopee Comp 0 — Eric Larsson broke the deadlock by blasting in a free kick in the second half to give Frontier the lead. 

Ian Paciorek added a goal off an assist from Gus Radner to put it away, lifting the Redhawks to a victory over the host Colts on Monday. Jack Cusson stopped two shots in the triumph.
