The Mohawk Trail field hockey team gave host Northampton everything it could handle on Wednesday.

The visiting Warriors tied the game on a goal from Kylah Perris-Howard, but the Blue Devils notched the game-winner with less than two minutes to go in regulation to snag a 2-1 Valley League victory in Northampton.

Perris-Howard’s tally was the first goal of the year for Mohawk Trail (0-4), and it was assisted by Cleome Gardner. The Warriors received seven saves in goal from keeper Izzy Finn.

Northampton’s Haly Doucette-Kaplan and Talya Fishman notched the goals for the home team.

Smith Academy 4, Turners 1 – Shae Moulton tallied two goals in the first quarter, and the visiting Falcons picked up a 4-1 Valley League victory in Turners Falls on Wednesday night.

Alexa Jagodzinski and Sophia Jagodzinski also scored for Smith Academy, while Turners Falls’ Jessi Berry netted the goal for the hosts.

Girls volleyball

Frontier 3, Springfield Central 0 – Abigail Hernandez put down seven kills and Parrish Stilla dished out 19 assists for the Redhawks in a 27-25, 25-14, 25-23 Eastern League sweep on Wednesday in Springfield.

“Really proud the we spread the ball around to all of our hitters,” said Frontier coach Courtney Parent, whose team improved to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the league.

Olivia Machon (six kills, four aces), Arianna Miller (12 digs, four kills) and Hannah Davis  (10 digs) also had stellar outings for Frontier.

 Girls soccer

Franklin Tech 3, Renaissance 0  – The Eagles are into the win column for the first time in 2024, as Tech notched a  Bi-County League victory in Turners Falls on Wednes day.

Laken Woodard started the scoring with the team’s first goal of the season midway through the first half, finishing thanks to an assist from Zoey Duda. Kailey James and Alyssa Peters also found the back of the net for the Eagles (1-2-1), while Elise Wolfe notched an assist and the goalkeeping duo of Shaylee Martin and Brayleigh Burgh combined to make two saves for the shutout.

“It was nice to finally see some of the fruits of our labor,” said Franklin Tech coach Jason Butynski. “I thought we had been playing pretty well in spite of our lack of goals. It was nice for the girls to see the ball hit the back of the net a couple of times today.”

Athol 1, Gateway 0 – Hannah Cardoso to the rescue.

Cardoso netted the game’s only goal late in the second half, finishing off an assist from Ariana Lopez-Hippler to lift the Bears to a 1-0 Bi-County League win on Wednesday at O’Brien Field in Athol.

The Bears stayed perfect at 3-0 on the season. Goalies Ava Adams and Grace Gauthier combined to make three saves in net.

Frontier 3, Easthampton 1 – Madelyn Fagan tallied twice, and the Redhawks stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 victory on the road at Nonotuck Park in Easthampton.

Carly Robertson also scored and assisted on both of Fagan’s goals. Frontier goalie Aylen Shaw made six saves, helping the Hawks improve to 3-0 on the season.

Pioneer 2, Pathfinder 1 – Visiting Pathfinder took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the game’s first 10 minutes, but the host Panthers settled in and rallied for their first Bi-County League victory of the season on Wednesday in Northfield.

Natalie Rios tied the game with a breakaway goal early in the second half, and Pioneer’s Maddie Keefe netted the game-winner with about 10 minutes to go in regulation. Rios played a cross into Keefe, who weaved through Pathfinder defenders and buried a shot in close to make it 2-1.

Goalie Kyler McClelland stopped two shots for the Panthers (1-1-1).

Golf

Frontier 180, Ware 208 – Cam Skiffington’s round of 40 paced six Redhawks with sub-50 rounds in a victory on Wednesday at Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown.

Brady Wood shot 45 for Frontier, which also received scoring contributions from Tyler Galenski (47) and Ryan Cetto (48). 

Mohawk Trail 186, Central 239 — Phineas Tuttman had the low round of the day, firing a 40 to lift the Warriors to a decisive victory on Wednesday.

Sam Mizula (46), Conner Bergeron (48) and Logan Moore (52) were the other scorers for Mohawk Trail.

Girls volleyball

Greenfield 3, Veritas Prep 2 — The Green Wave moved to 2-1 on the season with their second straight win on Tuesday night, holding on in a five-set thriller.

Stella Verlander put down eight aces to go with three kills and a block, while Mackensie Goncalves (four aces, five kills, one block) and Karinna Kostov (four kills, seven aces) also had stellat outings for the Wave.

Girls cross country

Frontier 15, Pioneer 50 — Liv Christensen bested the pack for the Redhawks in Tuesday’s win over Pioneer, crossing first with a time of 19 minutes, 43 seconds in South Deerfield.

Maddie Antes was second for Frontier (20:05), while the hosts swept the top 10 individual spots. Rounding out the top five were Phoebe Radner (20:06), Maia Christensen (20:16) and Sasha Malo (20:27).

Pioneer’s Mia Fowler-Shaw was 11th overall (24:03), and teammate Lucianne Burnap was 12th (25:58).
