Shirley Majewski: Dog shelter in Deerfield

I had to laugh when I read about the protest from the neighbors on Plain Road East in South Deerfield about the traffic concerns and noise. We also live in South Deerfield on a street with three houses and get over 1,000 cars, trucks, buses, and farm vehicles daily plus we have noisy AMTRAK.

I have been to the dog shelter in Turners Falls and it is deplorable shape. When I see cats here at Cumberland Farms eating garbage off the ground it breaks my heart. Seeing that the new shelter will make room for a dozen cats makes me even more in favor of their new site.

Do the folks on Plain Road East realize the shelter has saved hundreds of dogs who were left hurt, abandoned, starved and unwanted. Yet you fight it with your lawyer and you call yourselves human beings? I guess money talks but how about humanity to your fellow creatures. Haven’t you ever owned and loved a pet? They bring so much joy and love.

My husband and I have saved cat strays over the years and have one now. It had been hit by a car and was left starving. You should be ashamed of yourselves and your pettiness. If I had the space the animal shelter would be on our land. They have planned this for years since the DPW in Turners Falls promised them land and took it away to make their monstrous facility.

I hope you can look yourselves in the mirror and like what you see. I wonder how you sleep at night.
