David Parrella: Uninsured?

Remember when we used to worry about the uninsured? Of course you do! It was only 15 years ago and that nice Black man passed a bill that succeeded in reducing the percentage of Americans without health insurance to less than 10%!
Serious people had looked at what happens to people without health insurance and discovered that they still get sick! This revelation led Congress to confront what actually happens to the costs associated with their care. Guess what? Nobody pays them! That meant that hospitals and doctors had to pass those charges along to the government and other insurance companies and (wait for it) their costs went up!
So, unless we were going to let people die in the streets the costs of caring for the uninsured would illogically be passed along to you and me in the form of lousy coverage and higher premiums. But thank God that the president and the Republicans in Congress have finally realized that those costs aren’t anybody’s responsibility! Hospitals can close, doctors can move away, and people can die in the streets! Why didn’t we see this solution before? It turns out health reform was no big deal. All you had to do was stop thinking and caring about it. Thank you, Mr. President.
