Ellen Jenkins: The danger of tossing candy at parades

I recently heard of a ban in Greenfield of candies being thrown off parade vehicles to kids. I approve of it wholeheartedly.

I recently attended a parade where I saw young kids in the road running up to vehicles to catch all the candies. Dangerous for them to say the least as a driver might not see a small kid. Who is responsible if a kid gets hit or run over?

These kids I saw never saw the floats, trucks, marchers — only the candy. Parents were busy watching the parade to wave to someone they knew; they weren’t watching their kids at all.

I believe the drivers can be responsible towards the bystanders by not tossing candy. Much safer. And just maybe the kids can sit on a curb and look at the parade itself.
