I want to thank Louise Amyot and Larry Dean for their letters about the closing and loss of World Eye Bookshop. I imagine there are others out there who feel the same. If so, please write.

As an employee, I had a wonderful time connecting with the local community in a way I hadn’t experienced before. People were very kind and pretty much everyone was happy to be there for whatever purchase: books, puzzles, games, coloring books, stickers, art supplies, etc. Not only was it a space for purchasing the newest best-seller book, but people congregated and met up with each other — sometimes re-meeting after a long while, hugs included.

My boss, Tim, did a lot of outreach and extra care for home-bound customers who will never be able to replace that.

There were many hurdles in his way: taking over a business that had a $40,000 debt; in the middle of COVID-19; a new business owner; and only one employee who knew diddly squat. Everyone got used to using Amazon for ordering online, and there were five bookstores in the general area, several of whom started selling new books when previously they’d only sold used books.

We had great stuffies, including a giant octopus who may now reside at Woods Hole.

Well, there you have it. I miss it too.
