Dear Trump Supporter: Maybe you voted for Donald Trump because you are worried about immigrants coming across the border illegally, or staying here long after their visas expire.
Maybe you worry that you are at risk because you think they will commit crimes, take your job, or change your community.
Maybe though you didn’t expect that Trump’s immigration solution means that people working hard to grow your food live in daily fear of deportation. It could be that your elderly grandmother in a nursing home might sit in soiled pants for hours because her immigrant aide is afraid to come to work.
Trump took the oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. So maybe you didn’t expect him to ignore the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. Those say that all people on American soil get fair treatment in a court of law. Maybe you didn’t expect him to make an official government policy of cruelty: sending people to prisons in El Salvador without evidence of any crime and without a trial.
Maybe you voted for Trump because his focus on “America first” appealed to you. Perhaps you worried that too much money was being spent on foreign aid. We have enough problems and financial needs in our own country that you want Americans to have priority over the needs of foreigners.
But you might not have expected that Trump’s actions would dramatically alter the friendly relations we have had for decades with Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland. Those countries now show anger, fear and/or distrust of the us. Our global power is decreasing because developing countries are now choosing help from China and Russia instead of us.
Maybe you didn’t expect Trump to be willing to use military force to annex Greenland, would not rule out military force to make Canada our 51st state, or pressure Panama into giving the U.S. more control. You might not have expected that Trump would pick fights with countries that we had cooperative relationships with.
Maybe you didn’t expect that tourism would be hit hard by a significant drop in people visiting the United States because it no longer feels safe to many foreigners. Maybe your friend in Vermont got laid off from restaurant work because there aren’t enough tourists to justify his job.

Maybe you voted for Trump because he talked about making the government more efficient. You might have thought he and his team would analyze each department and weed out what wasn’t working well.
Maybe you didn’t expect Trump and his agents would terminate thousands of jobs without considering the impact of firing all those people. For example, hundreds of people entrusted with maintaining our nuclear weapons were fired without any system for taking care of those weapons.
Maybe you didn’t know that a lot of research into cancer cures, better farming practices, disease prevention, weather forecasting would all be greatly diminished because of reduced funding. You may have wanted government efficiency but you may not have expected that you couldn’t trust your hamburger to be free of bacteria, or that your cousin in Missouri would now be unlikely to get life saving warnings about coming tornadoes or flooding. Worse still, with cuts to FEMA, the agency is even less prepared to respond to disasters.
You might not have realized that Trump and his agents would push for a huge cut in the Veterans Affairs budget. This would dramatically reduce aid for veteran health care, housing, food, and job training. Perhaps you fought in Iraq, in our country’s service, and this cut to your health and food benefits hits hard.
Maybe you didn’t expect that congressionally approved grants to farmers and scientists would be taken back from them, after the grants had already been awarded. This means, for example, that farmers who made big investments to grow their crops more efficiently are not being paid back for the buildings/machinery/energy systems they paid for, knowing they had signed government contracts promising reimbursement. Some farms may fail because of this.
Maybe you were glad to have Trump stand up and fight against transgender people becoming accepted in society. But when he tied it to federal school funding, and especially the school lunch program for students Pre-K through 12, maybe you felt that making students go hungry is not the solution to that issue.
If you are concerned about any of these unexpected actions of President Trump, I urge you to contact him at whitehouse.gov and say so. Your opinion matters.
