GREENFIELD — The Hope & Olive restaurant’s sprinkler system suppressed a small kitchen fire on Thursday evening that was started by a malfunction of a propane torch used to make creme brulee.

Co-owner and manager Jim Zaccara said the Greenfield Fire Department was summoned by the restaurant’s automatic system at 6 p.m. and someone also called 911.

“Everything’s fine,” Zaccara said around noon on Friday. Hope & Olive opened for lunch at 11:30 a.m.

Zaccara said there were no injuries but the restaurant was forced to evacuate during the dinner rush.

“We lost the whole night,” he said, adding that he hopes to make up for the lost business on New Year’s Eve. He said tables are booked, but people are still invited to sit at the bar.

Greenfield Fire Lt. William Taylor said his department responded to the scene but the restaurant’s sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.

Hope & Olive, at 44 Hope St., is directly across the street from the Greenfield Fire Department’s temporary station at 53 Hope St.
