CONWAY — In the only contested race on Conway’s town election ballot, political newcomer Cecilia Van Driesche mounted a successful challenge against Frontier Regional School District School Committee incumbent Jared Campbell.
Van Driesche defeated Campbell, 116-96.
Voter turnout was 14.1%, as 211 of the town’s 1,494 registered voters participated in the election on Thursday.
Van Driesche, 41, said she has never run for public office before, but decided she wanted to give it a shot because it’s an opportunity to make a difference on issues that affect her family’s and community’s everyday lives. She added she is “really excited” to get to work with her fellow committee members.
On the education end, she noted she was also inspired to run by the statewide dialogue regarding Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) testing. She has two kids in the Frontier Regional and Union 38 school districts who really enjoy their time with the schools.
“I think the other really important factor was that I was feeling really frustrated with politics on the national level and I feel like there are a lot of things on the national/federal level that I just can’t have an impact on,” she said. “I can have an impact on my community.”
A nurse by trade, she said her work skills can translate to the School Committee. While she hasn’t served on a town board before, she does have previous volunteer experience, as she was a hospice volunteer. Taking that volunteerism to the government level, she added, is “the next iteration of that.”
“I think part of my professional training as a nurse is to be good at assessing a situation and to think critically about what’s next,” Van Driesche said. “I hope that is a skill set I can bring to the School Committee.”
