I am 82 years old and an independent voter. I have seen and lived under many presidents, some excellent and some that did not live up to America’s ideals. I can state quite unequivocally that Donald Trump is the most corrupt and inept president that I have ever encountered. I say corrupt because witness his creation of a crypto meme coin that allows anyone in the world, who curries Trump’s favor, to purchase his meme coins (essentially bribes) whose name Trump knows but remains unknown to the rest of us. Or consider Trump’s recent Truth Social message: “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!! DJT” right before he paused his tariffs. Marjorie Taylor Greene made a killing and Trump bragged about how his billionaire friends made millions. Or take these ruinous tariffs where exemptions can be purchased with a “donation” to his inaugural fund. Just ask Tim Cooke of Apple who gave a million and received an exemption for iPhones.

I just learned that Marina Goldman is running a write-in campaign for the Selectboard. What a great opportunity for the Town of Montague! Marina is smart, compassionate, a committed listener and will work tirelessly to bring positive and reasoned energy to our town government. A 36- year town resident and nurse practitioner, she has raised her family here and has roots and family ties to Turners, Millers and Montague Center. She will support quality schools, work to create housing our residents can afford, and continue to diversify our tax base with cultural and economic development. Please join me in writing in Marina Goldman for Montague Selectboard on town election day, Tuesday May 20.

No one wrote more powerfully about humans’ poisoning the Earth and its consequences than biologist Rachel Carson — with a focus on one contaminant, the pesticide DDT. She traced its toxicity through the food chain of nature and the loss of beneficial insects and birds, and then warned of the ultimate destruction of the natural world. Other environmental writers of the time were perplexed by the tidal wave of impact “Silent Spring” had compared to their books: it was both the accuracy of her science and the powerful beauty of her science writing. The award-winning “Silent Spring” was translated into all the languages of the industrial world, influenced key environmental legislation and spurred the creation of the US EPA. It was a gift that kept on giving. That was 1962.
