TURNERS FALLS — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has agreed to take on the cleanup of contaminated soil on First Street that has delayed the development of six affordable homes by Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity.

TURNERS FALLS — To repair one of the bascule gates at the Turners Falls dam that caused 445 gallons of hydraulic fluid to spill into the Connecticut River last month, FirstLight Hydro Generating Co. will be lowering water levels upstream of the dam during the week of July 7.

In the 1970s, the California sound played a significant role in shaping mainstream music. Back then, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing a song by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, or Linda Ronstadt.
TURNERS FALLS — The last of the focus groups the village has been holding, with help from consultant Ann Burke, about the rural downtown coordinator pilot project wrapped up on June 17, with members of the public engaging in a focus group to share their thoughts on what downtown Turners Falls could be.
Franklin County has unique 200-million-year-old features called Jurassic armored mud balls (“JAMBs”). Hopefully, many readers have heard about these. The Massachusetts Legislature is considering recognizing JAMBs as the official state “Sedimentary Structure,” in addition to over 50 other distinctly Massachusetts items such as Podokesaurus (state dinosaur), Dinosaur Footprints (state fossil), and Boston Crème (state donut).
