GREENFIELD — Forty income-eligible senior households will receive fresh, local produce starting Thursday, July 17, as part of the second season of a farm share partnership involving Prospect Meadow Farm and the Greenfield Senior Center.
The partnership was arranged through the South Deerfield-based nonprofit Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture’s (CISA) Senior FarmShare program, which provides low-income seniors with 10 weeks of locally grown produce. According to CISA’s website, the program provided 800 farm shares in 2024, with 22 distribution sites connected to 16 farms within the Pioneer Valley.
For the $10 sign-up fee, participants in the program, which has reached capacity, will be able to pick up fresh produce each Thursday morning through Sept. 18.
The connection between Prospect Meadow Farm and the Greenfield Senior Center grew out of logistical convenience. Prospect Meadow Farm’s output happened to match the number of shares that CISA planned to give out for the program.
“It also made a lot of sense geographically,” said Allison Laclair, director of operations at Prospect Meadow Farm. “Many of the individuals we work with live in or around the Greenfield area, so we were especially excited for the opportunity to support local seniors in that community.”
Prospect Meadow Farm, a therapeutic vocational farming program in Hatfield, employs individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The farm is run by ServiceNet, a nonprofit human services agency.
Hope Macary, director of the Greenfield Council for Aging and Senior Center, echoed Laclair’s enthusiasm for the farm share program.
“The Greenfield Senior Center is absolutely thrilled to continue our partnership with CISA and Prospect Meadow Farm to bring affordable farm-fresh produce to area seniors this summer,” Macary said in a statement.
