GREENFIELD — With five games in six days to close out the regular season, the Pioneer baseball team knew it would need to be focused if it wanted to keep its unbeaten record intact going into the postseason.

So far, so good.

The Panthers knocked off back-to-back Div. 3 champion Oakmont on Monday, pulled ahead late to take down Franklin Tech on Tuesday and Wednesday against Greenfield, the Panthers bats got going early.

Pioneer scored a run in each of the first two innings before putting three on the board in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Ben Werner did the rest on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out six over the seven innings as the Panthers moved to 16-0 on the year with an 8-1 victory at Vets Field.

“We have the luxury of having confidence on the mound no matter who we throw out there,” Pioneer coach Kevin Luippold said. “Between Ethan Quinn Monday, Alex McClelland Tuesday and Benny today, we gave up five runs in three days. It’s a luxury having confidence in all of them to keep us in games. The best part is one-through-15 loves to play behind each of them. That’s something to be proud of.”

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Greenfield (10-7), which couldn’t get it going at the plate Wednesday.

“That’s a good team,” Green Wave coach Tom Suchanek said. “We couldn’t hit. Ben threw the ball well for them.”

Alex McClelland, Werner, Ethan Quinn and Evan Tsipenyuk all doubled in the win, McClelland finishing with two hits and an RBI, Werner and Quinn driving in runs while Tsipenyuk had two hits and an RBI.

Braeden Tsipenyuk, Jackson Campbell, Ethan Mauthe and Brody Welcome also added base hits in the win for Pioneer.

“We’re feeling really good,” Luippold said. “We’re stringing hits together each inning. We’re not just putting together one big inning which is something we’ve had problems with in the past. We’re not closing the door some games but today we kept swinging and putting the bat on the ball. They’re a well-coached team and [Greenfield pitcher Caleb Thomas] did a good job on the mound.”

Chase Zraunig tallied two hits and an RBI while Logan Moore and Arthur Fitzpatrick hit safely for Greenfield. Thomas struck out three and surrendered seven hits in six innings of work.

The Wave close out their regular season Friday against Wahconah at Vets Field. Pioneer hosts Easthampton on Friday before going on the road to face Drury on Saturday, the No. 2 ranked team in the Div. 5 power rankings. The Panthers are ranked No. 1.

“We’re looking forward to Drury,” Luippold said. “I know our guys were bummed out last week when the rain pushed it back. They’re a well coached team and we both want to play each other. It’s a big game for both of us to see where we’re each at. We proved something to ourselves against Oakmont and at this point in the season, you have to keep proving it to yourself and to your team. That’s what we hope to do Saturday.”

Eichorn helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Kainen Stevens had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs.
