BERNARDSTON — Folks who are interested in shaping the future of Bernardston’s forests, fields, farms and parks are invited to a public forum on Thursday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at Bernardston Elementary School, 37 School Road.
The event, which will feature free pizza, will kick off with a presentation about what the Open Space and Recreation Plan is about, including why it matters, how it’s being developed and the top goals. Residents will then be asked to help prioritize the plan’s goals and actions, such as protecting natural resources and ecosystems, sustaining the town’s rural character and farm economy, and expanding recreational access and facilities. Bernardston is developing the plan in partnership with the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG).
A summary of the plan can be viewed at tinyurl.com/preview/24ya39f5. An online survey is also available at tinyurl.com/232llucm.
BERNARDSTON — The Flutie 5K for Autism on June 7 raised $6,390 for The United Arc of Turners Falls, making it the largest event to date.
Former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie and his wife Laurie started the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism in 1998 after their son, Dougie, was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. Their personal experience of raising a son on the autism spectrum inspired them to help others.
Over its 25-year history, the Flutie Foundation has distributed more than $19 million to schools and organizations that provide clinical therapies, respite services, recreational programs, social skills training, job support and more for people affected by autism. The Flutie Foundation also provides education technology tools, adaptive camp scholarships, safety equipment, and direct family support through its partnerships and special initiatives.
