Catrina Tobin put together a magnificent performance in goal for the UMass women’s lacrosse team in its 19-10 loss to Princeton during the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament on Friday in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tobin, a Sudbury native, totaled 19 saves in the defeat, which surpassed the redshirt junior’s previous single-game career high of 14. Tobin saw 38 shots on goal from Princeton to finish the contest with a .500 save percentage.

Tigers goalie Amelia Hughes wasn’t as busy, but still posted 12 saves as they advanced to the second round and a matchup with No. 8 overall Johns Hopkins.

UMass led 3-1 early in the first quarter following goals from Lauren Tolve, Kassidy Morris and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw, however Princeton proceeded to rip through an 8-0 run in goals to overtake the lead at 9-3 midway through the second quarter.

The Minutewomen managed to cut their deficit down marginally by halftime at 10-6, but the Tigers’ plethora of offensive talent proved to be the difference during the fourth quarter. Princeton potted seven goals in the final frame, after both teams slotted two strikes in the third, to seal the victory and close the curtain on UMass’ season.

Ava Connaughton was the Minutewomen’s top point-getter with two goals and two assists, Lil Hancock and Rodriguez-Shaw each recorded three points while Tessa Shields dished out two assists. Morris scored once, marking just the second time the redshirt junior was held to one goal in a game this season.

Jordan Dean played a part in UMass’ 17-14 edge in draw controls as the senior secured eight to lead the team in that category in the defeat.

Nine Tigers players found the back of the net on Friday, with McKenzie Blake leading the way with five goals and two assists. Jami McDonald (four goals) and Haven Dora (three assists) each factored into five Princeton goals while Sophie Whiteway, Meg Morrisroe and Colette Quinn all concluded with multiple points.
