Weekend roundup: Caleb Thomas tosses gem in Greenfield’s 4-0 win over Frontier; plus GMLB opening day results

The first of two regular season games between the Greenfield and Frontier baseball teams took place on Saturday in South Deerfield, with the Green Wave walking away with a 4-0 Suburban League West victory over the Redhawks behind a complete game shutout from Caleb Thomas on the mound.

Thomas struck out three in the win.

Luca Siano tallied a hit and an RBI while Conner Bergeron, Chase Zraunig and Malik Moore hit safely for Greenfield. 

Joey Hutkoski pitched for Frontier, striking out three in 6 2/3 innings of work. 

Softball

Wachusett 8, Turners 4 — Division 1 power Wachusett took a 6-4 lead after three innings and kept the Thunder off the scoreboard from there to earn an independent victory in Turners Falls on Saturday. 

Madi Liimatainen hit a pair of home runs to drive in four while adding seven strikeouts in the circle. Marilyn Abarua singled and doubled, Kaiya Adams tallied two hits while Mia Marigliano and Ivy Lopez hit safely in the loss.

Sweet Lucy’s Bakeshop 16, Parody Builders 10 — Ezrah Cooley and Emmett Lyon each had four hits in Sweet Lucy’s Rookie Division win Saturday. Tristan Earl and Aria Nice both had three hits in the loss.

Maniatty’s 6, Gilmore and Farrell 4  — Riley Gray hit two home runs and drove in five, Preston Charboneau singled and doubled while Jackson Puchalski struck out seven for Maniatty’s in a Majors contest Saturday. Ben Shivone struck out 11, Phil Brodeur doubled and Miles Williams had a hit in the loss. 

Gruber & Tripp 14, Ruggeri Real Estate 6 — Carter Sikoski and Weston Sibley each had three hits while EJ Morley had four hits in Gruber’s AA win Saturday. Jackson Merrigan had three hits while Xavier McCarthy and Bryce Vollinger both had two hits in the loss. 

Rotary Club 3, Lundgren Honda 2 — Solomon O’Neil Evans had a hit in Rotary’s win Saturday. Brody Suhl pitched well for Lundgren.

Ginger Cat Sealcoating 5, Gagne Wealth Management 4 — Bertie Watson singled and tripled while Kydanie Rivera and Wesley Lehman both had three hits and pitched in Ginger Cat's win Saturday. Oscar Lizotte and Fox Dube both had two hits and combined for three RBIs while Calvin Krezmien drove in a run in the loss. 

New Fortune 8, Smitty’s Pub 4 — Liam Gould, Blake Grover and Bryce Urkiel hit safely in New Fortune’s win Saturday. Malcolm Tyler doubled while Paul Budrawich and Owen Castine hit safely for Smitty’s. 

Liberty Tax 10, Pioneer Valley Tire 9 — Ben Trombley had three hits including a triple, Theo Schulte singled and doubled while Kyan Skutnik-Sheffield had two hits in Liberty Tax’s win Saturday. Cody Castine had two hits while Wyatt Wilkins and Laurence Shields hit safely in the loss. 

Denny’s Pantry 14, Aubuchon Hardware 5 — Andrew Quintana and Carson White combined to allow two hits while Mason Lovett tripled to drive in three in Denny’s AAA win Saturday. Joseph Gardner and Cooper Deane had hits for Aubuchon. 

Fitzgerald Real Estate 8, Baker Financial 8 — Ethan Martin was a home run away from the cycle, Connor Trainor doubled and Liam Grant pitched in Fitzgerald’s AA win Saturday. Liam Estrada and Jacolby Dyer both had three hits and Lucas Wallner had two hits in the loss. 

Middle school softball

Greenfield 16, Athol 5 — Rian Farrell homered, singled and drove in two, Samantha Rider doubled, tripled and drove in two while Aurora Reynolds drove in three with a triple in Greenfield’s win Friday.
